I am certainly turning into a fan of the Mr Color Laquer paints. It's a pity that I have to purchase them from Hong Kong via Luckymodel and not locally. In contrast to its predecessor, the nimble Ki-43, the Ki-44 was designed for speed and climbing ability, and was used to intercept high-flying B-29 bombers. With its poor visibility on the ground, weak armament, and high landing speed, it was generally disliked by pilots; its oversized engine and diminutive tail made it -in some eyes- one of the more unattractive craft of its class. In addition to the new engine, the Ki-44-II also had a reinforced chassis, protected fuel tanks, a 13-mm pilot's armored backrest and a 40-mm armored frontal glass of the cockpit canopy.

I got the Ki-44 not long after the kit was released. Nakajima Ki-44 – II Hei Shoki (Tojo) Captain Teiici Hatano Narimasu - 47 th Flight Regiment, 1944 . 1:32 scale release from Hasegawa of a Nakajima Ki-44-II Hei Shoki, kit number 08880. I will be modeling the scheme of Captain Teiici Hatano Narimasu who was deployed at the 47 th Flight Regiment in 1944. The cockpit photographs of s/n 2143, captured at Clark (and manufactured during October 1944), are fairly well known, but a new Japanese photograph, of the port side of the cockpit of another Ki-44 with the pilot's gloved hand on the throttle, appears on page 33 of Scale Aviation # 70 (Nov 2009). Since the interior coating of the Ki-43 Oscar can be substantiated as being fully coated in the cockpit area with the blue-green aotake, this close cousin, the Ki-44 Tojo most likely was painted the same.
